I'm glad you liked Hamura's, be it for the noodles, ambience, or the plain fact that you were on Kauai (I am jealous of course). Hamura's has definitely gone under the microscope thanks to James Beard, but despite the yay or nay opinions, for me it is simply a place to feel at home. I've actually seen visitors turn around and leave when they realized it wasn't anything like their ramen in SF...what a pity. There's another place around the corner, sort of, (Kako's Saimin - next to the Toyota dealership on Rice Street), and they dish up saimin too but I prefer Hamura's rounded strands as opposed to the flat, straight-cut noodles at Kako's. Boy do I miss home right now.

Regarding the eggfruit....uh-oh. I brought back 2 seeds with me and they are in potting soil next to a south window. Either I'll end up giving them to a nursery who specializes in tropical plants or else this one will simple turn out as an ornamental plant. I can only hope....
