Thai Food – Fish Sauce = Vegan
July 22nd, 2010
Well, there are a decent number of vegetarian and vegan options in Albuquerque already (at least, so says PETA in their list of best vegetarian-friendly cities). (Not that I’m endorsing PETA.) (Ever.)
(Ever.)
That being said, there is a new Thai restaurant opening soon in the former space where Lotus Cafe bit the dusk on Osuna & San Mateo. The new spot is called Thai Vegan, just in case it wasn’t clear what they specialize in.
Now, this is a pretty darn good idea, because it does not take a lot of tweaking to make Thai vegan. Remove the meaty proteins? Easy. Remove fish sauce? Ok, sure. Done. Most other ingredients are veggies, rice, coconut milk, spices. Not too complicated, though the results can be absolutely stunning.
I’m excited to check it out and see if I can tell the difference.

Does anyone remember the name of the original Thai restaurant on San Mateo in the Southeast Heights? It began with a “P.” It was replaced by Thai Ginger, and now Thai House.

SO EXCITED to hear about this place (and thanks for giving us vegans the heads up), even though PETA seems to think there are an abundance of vegan choices in the city, there really are not that many, compared to most other large, progressive cities.
It’s always nice to hear about more options!! And really, an ALL VEGAN place? Definitely in short supply!
Like you said, making Thai food vegan should be super easy and yet, not “too weird” for the average non-veggie person to still find plenty that they’re comfortable with.
Do you know if they have plans to post a menu online or their own website or anything?
