Duke City Dish – Events and Happenings mid-March 2012
March 16th, 2012
I’m due for a “what’s happening” update!!!
Here’s what hit my radar recently. Chime in if you have more to offer or great restaurant news to share.
Restaurant marketing – so this is interesting and kind of cool. Two new companies based in Albuquerque hope to help restaurant clients make more money. One, Table Tents, works with their branding and social media strategy, and another, POSLavu offers iPad-based point-of-sale systems. The latter was even featured on the Gordon Ramsay “turn your restaurant around you f**king idiot” show.
New places opening up!
Vintage 423 – a high-falutin’ place that initially got mixed reviews, but maybe they’re coming around.
Zacatecas – in the Bumble Bees space. Same as Vintage 423 but with tacos. Hopefully service and execution are in line with the gourmet prices.
Farm and Table – ok, this one is watch-worthy. Fine casual dining in the North Valley with lots of fresh produce and not-crazy prices.
Other Press:
Enchiladas Loved by Canadians – found this cute round-up of local enchiladas in the Calgary newspaper. Those folks need some HEAT.

Calling Zacatecas “The same as Vintage 423 but with tacos” is really a great misrepresentation. They are far from that. It is casual with fresh food made with great authenticity. Yes you will pay a higher price for high quality food but by saying it is High- Falutin’ is an injustice to your followers that may not go there for that description alone. I have followed your blog for awhile and I think you are better than that IMO.

Oh Phil, I apologize! I did not intend to compare the offerings at Vintage 423 and Zacatecas – only that they both were new, hyped, and had been getting mixed reviews from diners – and that I hoped things would level off and get better for both places. I definitely get the differences in food and atmosphere – my apologies for making it sound like I was comparing their food 1-for-1.

Once, eating at Earle’s Restaurant in Calgary, a Canadian chain, we ordered hot wings. We asked the waiter for the hottest they had. He asked us if we wanted the super secret hot sauce that the cook kept under the counter. We said yes. It was Cholula. We laughed, and laughed again when the kitchen staff came out to watch us eating the wings and licking our fingers without breaking a sweat. Poor Canadians….

To put up a minor defense of Canadians some of the best food I have ever eaten has been in Canada though not Calgary. One of the highest heat meals was in a Korean restaurant in Vancouver which is also the home of the best dim sum on earth and I will include China there. I am not usually a big steak fan but those small steaks they serve throughout Quebec are unbelievably good and a world without Quebec’s poutine is a world without sunshine or massive coronaries.
